I got to replace the exhaust pipe assembly, two gaskets and the AC fan control clutch thingy on my car. How cool is that? And it only cost me $1800! Woo!

Although, on the non-sarcastic side of this whole thing, they got it done in about 3 hours and I have AC again.

*sigh* I had been getting tons of OT pay the last few weeks. It all just got sucked away. It's a good thing I like my car.

Not only did I make a skirt completely from scratch, it is a Belle Epoch skirt with properly installed closure device AND for reals seam finishing. Specifically, flat-felled seams. If we ignore the hem (and I won't mind if you do), this is just a fantastic looking skirt, inside and out. It's stripey and averything! *sigh* Joy. And I made it in about 8 total hours. :)

I haven't made the apron I want to wear this Saturday yet. When you don't get home from work until 10 or 11 (or 2 am), you just want to harass the cat and go to bed (not necessarily in that order). So I may have an "incomplete" costume. But I shall not let that dampen my spirits. It's not like I don't have numerous other bits and pieces to throw into the costume.

Judge rules California's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional

(CNN) -- A federal judge in California on Wednesday overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage, saying the voter-approved rule violated the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians.

The decision, issued by Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker in San Francisco, is an initial step in what will likely be a lengthy legal fight over California's Proposition 8, which defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

At stake in the trial was whether California's ban on same-sex marriage violated the constitutional rights to equal protection and due process of two gay couples that want to marry.

Read the rest here.

O HAI! I'm the Constitution! I contain that list of Rights that some of you think only apply to yourselves and No One Else. But you know what? At least one judge out there knows that YUR DOIN IT WRONG LOL. :D

I find it telling that the Governator and the AG for the State refused to defend the law in court.

I had to work late again last Friday--it was around 8 when I finally left. Totally brain-fried. I did not make it to D's event at the Crowe (but I had called her to let her know--being an unexplained no-show is a big no-no with her (and me, too)). I think I fell asleep not long after getting home. I'm not sure, the evening is a bit of a blur to me. I found out later that the event was so well attended that they had to restrict the number of people out of fear of a Wrathful Fire Marshal.

Saturday, Teh Momster and I went to a small scrapbooking convention in Grapevine. It was mostly stamps and stamp-related schtuffus. I came home with 2 unmounted stamps (a repro of one of the Le Chat Noir posters, and teeny tiny bat) and 3 books (one on ATCs with new-to-me techniques and a bazillion examples, one on creating cards with vintage stuff, and one on altered art objects). The books were quite the steal--$70 worth of books for $15. It was fun, but very small.

While there I got a text from D with a picture of a black cat with red bow pitcher that had a price tag of $18.50. Teh Momster collects cat pitchers and creamers and tea pots, and black cats with red bows are her favorites. They are also the most difficult to find and invariably cost much, much more than $18.50. So we jumped on the opportunity and went by the shop on the way home (a tad out of our way, but it was so worth it). The shop is in Lakewood Shopping Center and is called Curiosities.

Oh Em Gee.

This place is amazing. It's (literally) packed to the rafters with vintage, art, "art", arts-n-crafts, and some honest-to-Bob- antiques. They have, like, everything. Seriously. Taxidermied beasties, Victorian pornography (displayed out in the open, so you may want to go without the littleuns the first time), vintage clothing, robots, typesetting letter blocks, maps, bottles, weapons, etc, etc. Some of it is, shall we say, optimistic in it's pricing, but a lot was priced in the "do they not know what they have here?" range. I saw many things I wanted, but I tried to control myself. I will definitely be going back.

The pitcher turned out to be a bottle, but Mom loved it so much she got it, and she found an old handkerchief box to hold her mother's and grandmother's handkerchiefs.

I bought a petticoat, probably post-1900 but pre-1910s, in lovely black cotton, with rows and layers of pleats and tucks, in wearable condition, for $20. It's been altered a bit from it's original state--the length has been taken up by a massive tuck above the decorative tucks (like, they took out at least 6 inches with it), the waist was taken in by a series of pleats held with a few hand stitches (and if I take those out, I think it will fit me!), and ties were inexpertly attached where hook 'n eyes should have been--but the original can be seen quite easily in it. Oh, it's a beauty! The original stitching looks like it was done on a chain stitch machine, and some of it has started to come out (will need to stabilize that if I do decide to wear it). I'm guessing it was a mass-produced petticoat that was altered at home at a later date. LOL! Can you tell I really love this thing?

As a child, did you feel like you were you expected to pursue a certain type of career? How did this make you feel? Did you wind up choosing a different profession or path?

I didn't just feel like it was expected, I was told that I would be an engineer (structural probably). I wanted to be an artist; but I ultimately became an architect (although I have not yet gotten a license). I sometimes joke that architecture was a compromise between the expectation and the desire.

I just got an email from Fabric.com with a new free pattern. This one is for a bonnet-like hat that maybe could be a jumping off point for various 19th century bonnet styles. Possibly. Anyway, the pattern is linked to on this page.

Please to be noting: I know nothing about the quality of these patterns, I just thought some of y'all might be interested.

Or in this case, Dudette. What part of "no, I don't want it toasted" do you not get. No, the flat bread does not have to be toasted. Unless you're pulling out raw bread, in which case a few seconds in a toaster oven are not going to help. If I want a toasted sandwich, I'll go to Quiznos because, frankly, they're much better at it. Seriously, don't argue with me over it, just slop on the chicken salad.

Last night I pulled out my "America Land That We Love" sampler to work on. I was looking forward to finishing another state (Idaho--woo...potatoes). I was working on the backstitching when I realized I had a big ol' knot on the back that happened way back at the beginning. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!! So I had to frog all that backstitching, which included some French knots that had to be cut out. And yes, I had to do it all because this knot left a loooooong loop of loose floss on the back. Frogging x's is annoying--frogging backstitch from between the x's on 18 ct fabric is a whole 'nother realm of frustration. I had to put it away after that.

I think I will start another pattern on 22ct (Yes, another one--don't judge me! :P ). It's from a blog called Sylvia's that is in German. She's having a year-long SAL that is just so darn cute! It's called "My Little Heart" (I think) and it's a monthly square themed around, well, the months and hearts. It will be a tad under 7" square on 22ct. Tiny, I know, but I like stitching tiny. Once I'm caught up it looks like it would be one or two evenings a month, and at the end I'll have a charming little sampler. Note to self: stop and get some white 22ct on the way home.

I ordered the Sense and Sensibility pattern because it was closer to the Image in my head of what I wanted. The pattern doesn't seem all that difficult; but it would take more time than I am currently willing to invest in costume pieces. I want pieces I can finish in a day (or a weekend at most) because I am severely space limited. Right now I don't want unfinished pieces hanging out all week at the mercy of three different cats (one of which is still not completely happy with her new digs) and/or mocking me with their Unfinished-ness every night when I just want to rest after work. So I'm defaulting back to the Butterick pattern I used to make the Kentucky Derby outfit. I'm still using the green-yellow-white hounds tooth because it's more important for me to use that fabric than any specific pattern.

This also gives me the opportunity to make up the skirt the way I had originally intended--with the tabbed overskirt. I still plan to alter it so there are tabs in back as well as in front, and I can use the yellow fabric or ribbon to outline the tabs. And I can either make the underskirt in the white linen-cotton I was going to use for the underskirt of the dress OR I can use the already made white silk underskirt from the KD outfit. I can finish the skirt(s) in less than a day. (Yes, they are that stupid easy to make--so love this pattern!) I can then attempt the corresponding blouse pattern and use the yellow fabric for cuffs and collar OR I can wear a modern RTW blouse that I think is more than pretty enough (it has sparklies on it!) I think if I make the blouse it could be finished in a day or at least one weekend. A hat I can make during the week because I can easily put it in a box for protection while it's being worked on. And that's really all that needs to be done. Nothing that requires extensive fitting or finishing (I am not too proud to use fusible tape to apply ribbon trim). Much less stressful.

I'm thinking I should maybe go look for an inexpensive folding chair to have something other than the ground to sit on at the picnic. Now is probably a good time to find a decent one, what with it being spring and all. What would be fun would be an honest-to-Bob picnic basket with dishes 'n stuff, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to pay for one.

Also? I found that icon to be so amazing I thought I'd like to steal it. One paralyze-o-matic bomb later, and it's mine.

Hee!

Yes, I name my cars. All but the very first one have been named after deceased female relatives. I (jokingly) use this as a threat against my mom, "behave or I'll name my next car after you". The current vehicle is Edna Mae (my maternal grandmother).

My first car's name was inspired by it's license plate: VEC-mobile. That doesn't seem quite as clever now as it did in high school.

Went out to my car this morning, pleased that I would actually be early for once (and on a Monday!). I look over as I'm unlocking the door and see water(?!) in the passenger seat. No, that's not water....DAMMIT!!!!

My car got broken into this weekend, probably last night. The nice police officer who came to take the report was as confused as I, as the only items taken were my phone charger (which doesn't work so Ha! on them) and my floor mats. Yes, you read that correctly--they took floor mats. I have come to the conclusion that the perpetrators were either a) rank amateurs, b) idiots, or c) all of the above. I'm betting on c.

So now I'm at home waiting for the glass company to come replace the glass and to spend money I don't have to do it.

Seriously, who looks at a beat up old Corolla with a crooked hood, factory original Toyota radio, and missing hub cap and thinks "Ooo, let's break into that one!"

A Corolla. Honestly. What's the crime world coming to?

Restoration Hardware has their German welding goggles back in stock for the holidays. I highly recommend them, even though they aren't cheap. They're a fantastic plug-and-play buy for your steampunk costuming. They'll work fabulously right out of the box. If you really want them, don't wait--in years past they have sold out quickly, at least in the stores.

Amendment Goof May Have Banned Straight Marriage in Texas

While attempting to block same-sex marriages in Texas, legislators may have inadvertently banned all marriage state-wide. Oops.

In the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Houston lawyer Barbara Ann Radnofsky said the following clause in The Texas Constitution designed to block same-sex marriage actually blocks all marriages.
Art. 1 Sec. 32. MARRIAGE. (a) Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman. (b) This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.
The amendment, added Nov. 8, 2005, is not a statement mired in legalese. In fact, it's pretty clear English. One thing that is identical to marriage is marriage ... and this clause bans that. The wording has now left many people wondering how such a blunder might have occurred, Radnofsky included.

Read the rest here.

"Oops" indeed. I find this extremely amusing. In an attempt to deny the right to marry, they instead leveled the playing field. Equality FTW!

Morons.
